Graduate in Medicine from Santiago de Compostela University. Doctor in Medicine from Oviedo University. Master in Hepatology from Oviedo University. Specialist in General and Digestive System Surgery (this specialty was obtained at the Asturian General Hospital in Oviedo).
At present, besides practicing surgery at the Jove Hospital Foundation in Gijón, he is Chairman of the Research Committee and Head of the Research Unit at that Hospital.
Further, he is Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Asturian Principality, he was Member of the Regional Committee of Ethics and Clinical Tests of the Asturian Principality for 10 years, and is now Member of several both Spanish and international professional and scientific societies.
His scientific career is evidenced by his over 170 scientific papers published in international journals (index H: 26); over 200 scientific lectures, contributions and workshops delivered at national and international Conferences; over 20 doctoral theses supervised; the intellectual authorship of 2 patents; and he has taken part in over 10 research projects on cancer, financed by national and international agencies. Dr. Vizoso has also been awarded over 40 scientific prizes, among them the “Surgery National Prize”, awarded by the Spanish Surgeons’ Association in 1995, the “Claudia Elies” Prize, awarded by the Catalan Institute of Oncology in 2009 to projects which develop new strategies to fight cancer, and more recently the “Severo Ochoa” Prize.
In 2018 he was awarded by the Asociación de Lúpicos de Asturias, in 2021 he received the second award in medical research in the XXXI edition of the área sanitaria V Research awards
