Graduate in Medicine from Santiago de Compostela University. He obtained his doctorate “cum laude” in 1986 from the same University.

He has completed several pre- and post-doctoral research stays at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Lisbon (Portugal), at the Istituto di Clinica Ostetrica e Ginecologica of Modena University (Italy), and at the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York (USA).

His research centers on cancer, studying the factors that might be involved in its development, such as the Pit-1 transcription factor, or in its treatment, such as stem cells, vitamin D and its analogs.

He has been Head Researcher in various research projects financed by state and regional public calls, or by private companies and foundations. He has published over 60 scientific papers in international journals and books, and has supervised 9 doctoral theses.

At present, he is Professor of Physiology at Santiago de Compostela University, and directs the “Oncologic Endocrinology” laboratory of the Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (Spanish acronym CIMUS) at Santiago de Compostela University.
